Change is Alway Good

This weekend I pitched out and organized 7 years of glaze test. They had multiplied under tables, in boxes, on shelves! This odyssey started when I relocated my studio to Dallas and switched from a gas reduction kiln to a cone 10 oxidation type of firing. I bought a Bailey front loader electric kiln with thick insulating walls that allow for slow cooling (helpful for certain glaze colors to form). Not all of my Kansas City glazes successfully transferred to this new firing environment. Those luscious ox-blood reds turned green in my new kiln. So hundreds of glaze tests later I now have a palette...

Hootie!

Several evenings last summer I noticed an unusual melancholy trilling coming from the outside our  bedroom window. It wasn't until my husband spied this well camouflaged owl I understood the source of the plaintive whine. After snapping a pic and researching his "head shot" on-line we discovered we had an eastern screech owl "holed up" across the street. True to the description  he was hanging out in a tree cavity - in this case one provided gratis by a local electrical company years ago as they pruned trees invading overhead electrical lines. He/she has provided endless enjoyment and some unexpected...

2013 Commission Work

2013 started off with a Dog Cat themed commission. A Dallas vet placed a Valentine's Day order (Mugs, Tiles, Bowls) for her staff. The doc requested that each pottery piece feature the staff member's animal family. One person wrangles 15 cats! I received 8x10 glossy photos of each precious pet and used them as an inspirational reference as I began to glaze each piece.

2012 Special Commission Work

Here is a look at some of the special commission work that I created for customers in 2012. It's great fun working together with clients on glaze colors, their image ideas and shapes. "Bespoke" you might say borrowing from the British term to personalize something. This custom vase with hollow handle was added to a client’s collection of my work.      This client wanted to incorporate all the things he loves seeing near his cabin in Carbondale - especially the bears.     These Chili Bowls were Christmas gifts for my client's five children - each bowl highlights a child's hobbies,...
